Learning to Love Sloths

Buttercup and Me

Buttercup and Me

Costa Rica

One of the ports of call on our itinerary is Costa Rica, one of my very favorite destinations.  We call at Puerto Limon on the Caribbean side which allows us access to the Tortuguero Canals, Veragua Rainforest, Pineapple Farms, Banana Plantations, Aerial trams, sloth sanctuary, horseback riding in the rainforest and my favorite – zip lining or canopy tours as they are called.  We had an 84 year old lady do the zip line with her family and they have the photos to prove it!

I went to the sloth sanctuary, which was delightful.  An American woman and her Costa Rican husband started a bed and breakfast here years ago.  Someone brought them an orphaned baby sloth who they named Buttercup.  They raised her and she is still at the sanctuary, the matriarch of the place.  It is she in the photo with me and the owner.  They became known as the place to take injured/orphaned sloths and they have become world reknown experts on sloths.  They had a number of babies there when I went who absolutely steal your heart away.  Those little faces are just tooo cute!  At the sanctuary you do a canoe ride on the river and we did manage to get pretty close to a cayman (small crocodile) before it ran off.

Costa Rica has over 500 species of birds alone.  If you are a birdwatcher this is the place for you.  If you are at all interested in wildlife then Costa Rica and Panama are wonderful destinations and cruising is a perfect way to sample them both.

I Forgot to Buy a Hat!

Cristobal Port Market, Panama

Cristobal Port Market, Panama

It is now cruise #2 for the Gardners on the Zuiderdam.  Cruise #1 went as well as can be expected considering we were stumbling our way through procedures, directions and learning things like where the officers’ laundry is.  As in any new job, you feel very unorganized until you actually determine your own system for handling the processes.   I feel better today, having completed the first “End of Cruise” report and a power point presentation we need to broadcast.

Original Gates

So-my reflections on the Panama Canal.  This is one amazing feat of engineering, especially considering when it was built.  The fact that the gates for the locks are the originals is pretty staggering in itself.  The photo shows one of the gates as we pass through.  Our ship has a clearance of 4.5 feet or 2.25ft on each side.  Doesn’t leave a lot of room for error, does it?  A ship the size of ours pays between $300,000 and $350,000 to make the transit, which explains the high port taxes and fees you pay for this voyage.

I was lucky enough to be on the return portion of a shore excursion that stopped at one of the observations points and we all saw the Zuiderdam make the transit back through the locks.  It is very unusual to be able to see your own ship from land.

Along with the canal, I went on a rainforest walk and boat ride to see the flora and fauna of Panama.  We managed to see a toucan, a very rare event, evidently.  Even the guide had not seen a toucan!  The usual leaf cutter ants, monkeys, butterflies and sloths were sighted to the delight of the passengers.  No crocodiles seen on this boat trip but a lovely ride nonetheless.

On Board At Last

Well, kids, we boarded the Zuiderdam this morning at 8am.  We are unpacked and amazingly it all fit into the inside cabin on deck 5.  As long as we don’t spend too much time in here with no sunlight we will be just fine.  I have visions of Jack Nickelson in The Shining.

The ship is beautiful and the passengers on board are enjoying getting lost and looking for matches.  I can see that our desk position is such that we will be giving directions and advice as much as we will be booking future cruises.  Scary thought since this is my first time on the ship as well.

All of the crew we met so far have been most gracious and welcoming with offers of help if we need any.  There is a whole ship culture on board that will be very interesting to learn.  The sociologist in me is intrigued and I am looking forward to being part of it.

Bye for now.  We are off to the medical office to turn in our physical forms and then to the safety class.  We have an environmental class to do tomorrow and a few other requirements before we actually get our id’s.  Not sure if they throw us overboard if we don’t pass or not.  Will advise!

Training Begins

Graduation day with Sara

Graduation day with Sara

Michael and I are in Seattle at Holland America learning the reservation system so we can begin our upcoming journey.  After 3 and 1/2 days we can now make new reservations, take deposits and post payments.  Yeah!   Any new system presents it own quirks that you need to know and Polar is no different.  cbok, dbok, ssv, fcc, aval – and more to come.   I told Michael that now he knows what travel agents do every day and he is beginning to appreciate the work we do from a technical viewpoint.

The staff in the office is very helpful and they are enjoying watching Michael go from 30 years of sales in to a totally new position of cruise consultant.  He is proving up to the task and will do very well, I’m sure.  I can’t believe we are leaving in less than 2 weeks and I have a life time of work to do before going.  We have this week in Seattle and then they will turn us loose on the Zuiderdam.  Wish us luck!

It costs how much to call home?

So I have my Skype account now, gardner310. For those of you who are on Skype add my account name to your contacts.  For those who aren’t on Skype, you should look into an account.  Free calls are always a good thing.  After talking to AT&T, my cell phone service, I decided that the cell phone will be an emergency vehicle only or my phone bill will be more than my salary.  I am bound and determined to learn Skype including doing the videos with a web cam.  Any instruction and tips from those who are using Skype would be most welcome.

Hello world!

I am a long time travel agent who is making some life changes and going to sea to sell.  In February we will begin sailing on Holland America’s Zuiderdam as officers, job title – on board cruise consultants.  We are moving from a 4 bedroom house into an inside cabin for 4 months after 31 years of marriage.  So what do you think the odds are of making it to 32 years in an inside cabin?  I’m thinking of starting a pool.

As we get prepared to leave and gearing up on my technology to bring along, pare down a wardrobe to what I need and what I can store and rearrange my own travel business, I will keep you informed of the progress.

Visit often after Feb 1 to read about our onboard experiences and the ports we visit.  Sail away with us!
